Summary

Amazon announced three Android tablets, in 8.7-, 11- and 12-inch sizes, with Alexa+ built in and access to the Google Play Store. US prices start at $229.99.

Amazon has announced three Android tablets with Alexa+ built in and access to the full Google Play Store: the 12-inch Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, the 11-inch Amazon Alexa Tablet 11 and the 8.7-inch Amazon Alexa Tablet 8. The lineup combines Amazon services such as Kindle and Prime Video with apps including YouTube, Netflix, Gmail and Google Docs.

Three sizes, with a new high-end model

The 12 Pro is the largest and most productivity-focused model. Its 12-inch display has a 280-pixel-per-inch resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate and a 3:2 aspect ratio. It uses a 4nm, eight-core processor and is offered with up to 16GB of RAM. Amazon says it delivers nearly three times faster processing and nine times faster graphics than any tablet the company has previously shipped.

A second screen option, called Nanomatte, uses a texture etched into the glass at the sub-pixel level. Amazon says it developed the photolithography process with Corning to reduce glare while retaining detail and colour accuracy. The 12 Pro also supports an optional USI 2.0 Pro Pen, with 4,096 pressure levels, tilt detection and wireless charging, and a keyboard that attaches magnetically. Amazon lists quad Dolby Atmos speakers, Wi-Fi 6E and up to 16 hours of video playback.

The 11-inch model has a 2.5K display, 276 pixels per inch and a 90Hz refresh rate. Its eight-core processor, 8GB of RAM, dual Dolby Atmos speakers and claimed video playback of up to 15 hours position it as a larger-screen option without the 12 Pro’s pen and keyboard features being highlighted in the announcement.

The 8.7-inch Tablet 8 is the most portable model. It weighs 329 grams, measures 7.95mm thick and includes an eight-core processor, Wi-Fi 6 and up to 14 hours of video playback, according to Amazon.

Amazon is also adding a Kindle reading mode to the tablets. The company says opening a book in the Kindle app silences notifications, reduces blue light and can extend battery life to up to 20 hours. The mode offers three display themes; on the 12 Pro, readers can also annotate pages with the Pro Pen.

Alexa+ works alongside apps

Alexa+ can be opened by voice or by tapping an on-screen button. Amazon says its tablet interface can provide help without requiring users to leave the app they are using. With On-Screen Intelligence, Alexa can interpret visible content—for example, summarising hiking options on a webpage or helping add dates from a schedule to a calendar.

On-Screen Intelligence is off by default and requires users to opt in. A visual indicator appears when Alexa is active, and Amazon says the feature can be disabled in Settings. Live sessions allow a continuing hands-free conversation without repeating the wake word; screen sharing during a session is optional.
