Summary
Apple announced 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with a tandem OLED display, touch input on Mac for the first time and M5 Pro or M5 Max chips. Pre-orders begin October 28, with availability starting November 6.
Apple has announced new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models that bring touch input to the Mac for the first time, alongside a tandem OLED display branded PROLED XDR. The laptops use Apple’s M5 Pro or M5 Max chips and are available to pre-order from October 28 in 30 countries and regions. Apple says deliveries and sales through its stores and authorised resellers begin November 6.
Tandem OLED and touch are the headline changes
The PROLED XDR display uses two self-illuminating OLED pixel layers. Apple says its panel design, display-processing algorithms and factory calibration are intended to improve brightness and grayscale uniformity while reducing internal reflections. The company lists peak HDR and SDR brightness of up to 2,000 nits, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio and an adaptive refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz.
For colour-sensitive work, the display supports both P3 and Adobe RGB colour spaces, with more than 80 per cent Rec. 2020 coverage, according to Apple. A nano-texture option is also available to reduce reflections and glare. These features are aimed at tasks such as photography, design, video editing and colour grading.
Touch is built into the display panel rather than added as a layer on top, which Apple says reduces latency. Users can scroll, zoom and move items on screen, while designers can draw directly on the display and musicians can play software instruments by touch. Apple says touch works alongside the keyboard and trackpad; macOS can translate touches into clicks for many existing apps, while updated gesture tools let developers build touch-specific controls.
The Mac’s new Dynamic Island brings Spotlight search, Live Activities and Siri AI into a single on-screen area. Apple says Siri AI is in beta in macOS 27.2 and requires a supported language; the announcement also describes broader Apple Intelligence features in macOS 27.
M5 chips, lighter designs and availability
Apple says M5 Pro and M5 Max are designed for demanding creative and technical workloads, with a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core for AI tasks. The company says M5 Max can run large language models with hundreds of billions of parameters entirely on the device. Configurations offer up to 128GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of storage.
The 14-inch model weighs 3 pounds and has a 14.2-inch display; the 16-inch model weighs 4 pounds and has a 16.3-inch display. Apple says both are thinner and lighter than their predecessors, and that battery life reaches up to 24 hours. The laptops also include three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack. M5 Pro configurations support up to three external displays, while M5 Max models support up to four.
In U.S. pricing, the 14-inch M5 Pro model starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch at $3,399. M5 Max versions start at $4,499 for the 14-inch model and $4,799 for the 16-inch model. Those are Apple’s stated U.S. starting prices.
