Summary
BMW says its Munich plant will build the fully electric BMW M3, which it describes as the first high-performance model to use BMW M Neue Klasse technology. The announcement comes as the site prepares to switch to exclusively fully electric vehicle production from 2027.
BMW says its Munich plant will build the fully electric BMW M3, which it describes as the first high-performance model to feature BMW M Neue Klasse technology. The announcement accompanied the production of BMW M’s one-millionth vehicle: an M3 finished in BMW Individual Fire Orange III paintwork.
The milestone counts BMW M vehicles overall, not M3s alone. BMW presented the car at a ceremony at its Munich plant, where production of the current M3 generation began in 2020.
The electric M3 is planned for Munich
BMW says the future fully electric M3 will be manufactured exclusively at its main plant in Munich. It is set to be the second Neue Klasse model produced there, following the fully electric BMW i3.
The announcement sets out a manufacturing plan rather than a detailed vehicle reveal. BMW has not provided the electric M3’s technical specifications or a model-specific production start date in this release.
The plan connects the M3’s next generation to a wider change at the site. BMW says its Munich plant will produce only fully electric vehicles from 2027. That commitment applies to this plant; it is not a statement that BMW M’s entire vehicle range will become electric.
A plant being retooled for electric production
BMW says the Munich site was remodelled for electric vehicle production while manufacturing continued. A new body shop and vehicle assembly facility, including new logistics areas, were built across about a third of the plant’s total area. The company says it is investing around €650 million in the transformation.
The announcement places a high-performance model within the plant’s planned electric future. It also makes the M3’s production location part of the story: BMW is committing to build the fully electric version at the same Munich site associated with the current generation.
