Summary

BMW Motorrad has presented the F 450 R, a 420 cc naked bike rated at 35 kW (48 hp) and weighing 175 kg ready to ride. It pairs an A2-class engine with a road-focused chassis, standard rider-assistance systems and four equipment variants.

BMW Motorrad has presented the F 450 R, a 420 cc naked motorcycle rated at 35 kW (48 hp) and 43 Nm of torque. The company lists its ready-to-ride weight as 175 kg and describes it as a model for the European A2 licence class, whose power limit the bike meets. It is a road-focused member of the F 450 family, using an engine first introduced in the F 450 GS but tuned for the new model.

A compact twin and road-focused chassis

The fuel-injected parallel-twin produces its peak power at 8,750 rpm and maximum torque at 6,750 rpm. BMW says 80% of the available torque is on tap from 3,000 rpm. A 135-degree crankpin offset and balance shaft are part of the engine design; the company says these contribute to smoothness and character. The engine works with a six-speed transmission and a chain final drive.

BMW quotes fuel consumption of 3.8 litres per 100 km and a range of more than 350 km from the 14-litre tank. Its accompanying measurement note says fuel-consumption and range figures were measured under the methods required by Regulation (EC) 2007/715, as amended, and refer to vehicles on the German market.

The F 450 R uses a welded-steel tubular space frame, with the engine integrated as a load-bearing element. Its chassis is based on the F 450 GS concept but set up for road use. At the front is a 43 mm KYB upside-down fork; at the rear, an aluminium double-sided swingarm and KYB spring strut. Braking combines a 310 mm front disc and Brembo four-piston caliper with a 240 mm rear disc. ABS Pro, Dynamic Brake Control, Dynamic Traction Control and engine drag torque control are standard, alongside Rain, Road and Dynamic riding modes.

Four equipment variants and an optional clutch system

The model is offered in Base, Exclusive, M Sport and M Sport with Innovation Package versions. Shift Assistant Pro is included on all but the Base model, where it can be retrofitted. Exclusive also adds Sport suspension; M Sport versions add Riding Modes Pro and Sport suspension. The Innovation Package adds BMW’s optional Easy Ride Clutch (ERC), which engages the clutch according to engine speed. With Shift Assistant Pro, BMW says ERC allows starts, stops and gear changes without operating the clutch lever, which remains available for rider input. ERC can also be retrofitted to other variants as an accessory.

The standard equipment list includes heated grips, LED lighting and a 6.5-inch TFT display with a USB-C port. The standard seat is 790 mm high; BMW lists optional low and high seats at 775 mm and 810 mm respectively. The announcement describes the motorcycle and its equipment, but does not give a price or sales date.
