Summary

Google says Gemini users can now create, preview and edit files within a chat, including documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets and code. PDF support is available on web and mobile; the other listed formats are web-only.

Google has added tools to create, preview and edit files directly in the Gemini app. The company says users can work with documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, code and other file types from within a chat, rather than treating the first generated version as the finished document.

Create and refine files in a chat

Gemini can generate files and display a preview in the conversation. Users can expand a file to full screen and type edits directly. They can also highlight text and ask Gemini questions about it, or request changes to text and visuals.

Google describes a study-guide example: a user uploads handwritten lecture notes, asks Gemini to make a PDF study guide, then edits and highlights parts of the result and asks Gemini to revise them. The example illustrates a workflow that combines file creation, direct manual changes and prompts for further refinements.

The announcement covers Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code, as well as PDFs. It does not give separate technical details for each format, but says they can be generated, previewed and edited within Gemini.

PDF support extends to mobile

PDF preview and editing are available on both the web and mobile versions of the Gemini app. The other formats named by Google—Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, TXT and code—are supported on the web only.

Google says the capabilities are available to all users in every language where the Gemini app is available. The format and device split is important for people planning to make edits on a phone: the announcement specifically includes PDFs for mobile, while the other listed file types require the web app.
