Google says its AI & Economy ATLAS v1.0 study analysed 15 million de-identified interactions and found that more than 86% of conversational AI interactions occurred entirely outside formal work. The company presents household administration as one area where these tools may reduce manual effort.
Four household tasks Gemini can assist with
Troubleshooting repairs and maintenance. Gemini can provide step-by-step guidance for tasks such as setting up toys, caring for a car or investigating a household appliance problem. Google gives the example of opening the camera in Gemini Live and asking what a blinking modem light means when an internet connection is down. For repairs involving electricity, gas, structural components or safety-critical equipment, manufacturer instructions and qualified service remain the appropriate reference points.
Planning meals and shopping. Users can ask Gemini to build meal plans and matching grocery lists around dietary restrictions or selective eaters. With Gemini Live, the camera can be directed across refrigerator shelves so the system can identify visible ingredients and suggest recipes based on leftovers. Google says this may also help reduce food waste. The company adds that connecting Instacart can allow ingredients to be added to a cart and purchased in a few taps.
Organising household spending. Gemini can process uploaded photographs of receipts and extract information from them. Google suggests using the tool after a trip to ask for a summary of expenses in a particular location and currency, such as Mexico expenses in US dollars. This is intended to reduce the manual entry involved in organising receipts and reviewing a household budget.
Comparing major purchases. Gemini can be used to structure comparisons for complex household purchases. Google's example is a request to compare hybrid SUVs suitable for a family of four, producing a side-by-side table. The company also suggests asking Gemini for negotiation tips at a dealership.
Google's estimate of the broader effect
Google says that small time savings could have a substantial aggregate value. Its researchers estimate that saving households an average of 30 minutes per week through everyday AI use could amount to roughly $100 billion in annual economic value in the United States.
That figure is a projection from Google's study rather than a measured saving for each of the four workflows. The practical value of the features will depend on the quality of the information supplied, the complexity of the task and whether the output is checked before action is taken. Receipt summaries should be checked against the original documents, while repair guidance and purchase comparisons benefit from current manufacturer or seller information.
The examples show a shift in how Google is presenting Gemini: not only as a workplace assistant, but also as a tool for coordinating the recurring decisions and administrative tasks involved in running a household.
