Hardware built for on-device AI

Google says every Googlebook uses premium materials such as aluminium, magnesium alloy or carbon fibre. Depending on the model, features include responsive touchscreens with resolutions up to 2.8K OLED, haptic glass trackpads and backlit keyboards.

The laptops use top-end Intel or Qualcomm processors paired with dedicated neural processing units, or NPUs, capable of more than 45 tera operations per second (TOPS). NPUs are specialised processors for AI workloads, and Google positions them as part of Googlebook's on-device performance. The company quotes battery life of up to 14 hours, although that figure is a maximum specification rather than a single runtime for every model.

Google is also bringing back its Glowbar indicator. The exterior light shows the device starting up, displays the battery-charge level and responds with animations when the user talks to Gemini.

Android phone continuity and Gemini tools

The central feature is the connection between Googlebook and an Android phone. During setup, Google says the laptop can carry over phone settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks and messages, with the transfer protected by end-to-end encryption.

The Continue On feature is intended to let users resume a task started on their phone from the laptop's taskbar. The Files app can display and open files and photos stored on the phone, while Cast My Apps streams phone applications into a desktop window. Google gives food-delivery apps and Messages as examples of tasks that can be handled without repeatedly switching devices.

Googlebook is also designed around Gemini Intelligence. Magic Pointer brings Gemini to the content under the cursor, where it can perform tasks such as organising a calendar or translating text when requested. Google says users can turn the feature off.

Rambler converts spoken notes, action items or free-form thoughts into structured writing with headings, checklists and formatted takeaways. It supports spoken input in multiple languages. Create My Widget generates desktop widgets from plain-language descriptions and can provide updates during the day.

Security, software and availability

Googlebook combines a desktop Chrome browser with extensions and access to the Play Store's Android applications. Google says the laptops support native creative applications including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and CapCut, as well as offline viewing on services such as Netflix and HBO Max. Each purchase includes a complimentary year of GeForce NOW, according to the announcement.

For developers, the laptops include Google's Antigravity AI agent development platform and a full terminal environment. This is intended to support development tools such as Claude Code and Antigravity CLI, alongside an isolated Linux environment.

Google says the security design is based on ChromeOS architecture, including a Google Titan hardware root of trust, defence-in-depth protections and on-device malware detection. The company also describes a Level 5 security-certified pKVM hypervisor as a first for the laptop category. It powers the isolated Linux environment while allowing access to a full terminal.

Pre-orders are available through the Google Store, Best Buy and other selected retailers. Devices are scheduled to reach shelves on October 4 in the U.S., followed by October 5 launches in Canada, the U.K., Ireland, France, Germany and Australia. Googlebook starts at $899 and includes 12 months of Google AI Pro with 5TB of cloud storage and Gemini Advanced tools, plus three months of YouTube Premium, Adobe Photoshop and other benefits. Google also says Googlebook OS will receive regular feature updates for up to 10 years.
