Summary

Hyundai announced the IONIQ brand’s launch in China and unveiled the VENUS sedan concept and EARTH SUV concept at an event in Beijing. The company says China-specific production models and an electrification strategy will be detailed at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.

Hyundai announced the launch of its IONIQ brand in China at an event held from April 7 to 10 at Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing, unveiling two concepts: the VENUS sedan and EARTH SUV. The concepts introduce the design direction for the China-focused IONIQ line; Hyundai says it will present information on production models and its China-specific electrification strategy at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.

The announcement is a market-specific expansion of IONIQ, rather than the debut of a new global vehicle brand. Hyundai says the China strategy will draw on its global experience while incorporating local technologies and partnerships. It describes the broader ambition as a mobility ecosystem shaped around Chinese customers.

Two concepts sketch out IONIQ’s design direction

VENUS and EARTH are the first concepts Hyundai has shown as part of this renewed push in China. The company presents them as design studies, not as production vehicles with announced specifications.

VENUS is a sedan concept finished in a colour Hyundai calls Radiant Gold. Its design includes a one-curve profile, a lightweight roof structure and a transparent spoiler. Inside, Hyundai describes layered mood lighting, contrasting materials and a character called Lumi as elements of a driver-focused cabin.

EARTH takes the form of an SUV intended to represent a vehicle for everyday use. Its exterior combines sharp edges with sculpted surfaces, while the cabin is described as a calm, spacious environment. Hyundai also highlights air-hug seats, nature-inspired lighting and subtle features it calls “shy-tech.”

The contrasting concepts give the China launch both sedan and SUV design expressions. Their styling details are presented by Hyundai as previews of the brand’s direction; the announcement does not identify corresponding production specifications.

A China-focused lineup and next steps

For China, IONIQ will use planet-inspired names, with Hyundai describing the lineup as a customer-centred “universe.” The company says it aims to combine its safety and quality standards with technologies shaped around local customers’ needs.

Li Fenggang, president of Beijing Hyundai Motor Company, said the company plans to introduce production models combining smart-driving and smart-cabin experiences. Hyundai has said it will provide concrete information about those models, alongside its China-specific electrification strategy, at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.

That makes the concepts an introduction to a broader market plan, while the next announced stage is the disclosure of production-model details. The launch announcement gives no specifications for those future vehicles.
