Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Limited (MLMML) has been named one of 15 finalists for The Earthshot Prize 2026. The company says it is the only Indian automotive company among this year’s finalists; it was selected in the “Clean Our Air” category for its electric last-mile transport work.
The recognition is for a finalist, not a winner. Three finalists have been selected in each of the prize’s five categories. One winner in each category will receive £1 million at the awards in Mumbai on 17 November 2026. All 15 finalists will also join the year-long Earthshot Fellowship programme.
Electric vehicles as working assets
MLMML makes small commercial vehicles for passenger and cargo use. Mahindra reports that the company has sold more than 4 lakh electric vehicles, which have collectively travelled over 9 billion kilometres. The company says this distance has helped avoid approximately 185,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
Mahindra presents the transition as both an environmental and an economic change. It says electric vehicles can lower operating costs and improve earning potential for drivers and small businesses, while reducing tailpipe emissions. The company describes three-wheelers and small commercial vehicles as working assets for drivers, shopkeepers and delivery partners.
Its UDAY NXT programme offers driver accidental insurance and financial counselling, according to the announcement. These services are intended to support vehicle owners and their families alongside the shift to electric transport.
The 2026 prize and its finalists
The Earthshot Prize selects 15 finalists each year across five environmental categories: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-free World and Fix Our Climate. Five winners are chosen, one in each category, and each receives £1 million to help expand their solution.
The 2026 awards night will take place in Mumbai on 17 November, the first time the programme is being held in India. For Mahindra, finalist status places its electric last-mile mobility work in a global cohort assessed for potential environmental impact at scale. The company’s reported fleet and distance figures indicate the scale of its deployment; its stated avoided-emissions figure is an estimate attributed to Mahindra.
