Summary

Microsoft has announced the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch, both built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus. The PCs are due to go on sale in select markets on October 13, with Microsoft reporting performance gains over the previous generation.

Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch on September 23, both built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus processor. The company says the new PCs deliver up to 17% faster Office productivity, more than 60% faster graphics and up to 95% faster local AI inferencing than their previous-generation counterparts. They are scheduled to become available in select markets on October 13.

What Microsoft says has improved

Microsoft’s comparisons are against the first-generation Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch, both equipped with Snapdragon X Plus. Its reported gains include up to 18% more efficient battery performance, alongside the productivity, graphics and AI figures. The company’s test notes cite Procyon Office Productivity, 3DMark Steel Nomad Lite and Procyon AI testing, and say results can vary with device configuration, workload and settings.

Local AI inferencing means running an AI model on the PC rather than sending every task to a remote service. The Snapdragon X2 Plus includes a neural processing unit, or NPU, for this kind of computation. Microsoft says supported Windows experiences can use the device, cloud services or a combination, with local processing offering lower latency and keeping some data on the device.

The figures are manufacturer-reported benchmark comparisons, not a guarantee of the same improvement in every application. Battery life also depends on the task and settings: Microsoft’s stated 22.5 hours for the Laptop is based on local video playback, while its claim that the Pro gains an extra hour of active web browsing comes from a test using preproduction software and hardware.

Two form factors, with different uses

The Surface Pro 12-inch is a fanless Windows tablet designed to work with a separately sold keyboard and Slim Pen. Microsoft says its touchscreen reaches 500 nits and is 25% brighter than the previous model. It also introduces Microsoft Ink Canvas, a pen-first app for sketching, annotating, generating images and summarising text. The app is pre-installed on the new Pro and is scheduled to be available from the Microsoft Store on October 13 for other supported Surface and Windows devices. Some AI features require a Microsoft 365 subscription, and usage limits apply.

The Surface Laptop 13-inch is a conventional touchscreen laptop with a full-size backlit keyboard, precision touchpad and 3:2 display. Microsoft also lists a 500-nit screen and up to 22.5 hours of battery life for local video playback. Both PCs add a Black colour option; Microsoft says the Pro enclosure uses 86% recycled content, with its footnote specifying that the device figure excludes the power supply.

The Surface Pro 12-inch starts at $1,149.99, and the Surface Laptop 13-inch at $1,199. These are the announced starting prices; availability is limited to select markets from October 13. Microsoft also says a 5G configuration of the Pro will be offered to business customers, with support varying by market and carrier.
