Samsung has announced phased software updates for selected existing refrigerators and laundry appliances, with the rollout scheduled to begin in September 2026. The updates are based on Tizen OS 10.0 and are intended to bring some features and services introduced on Samsung’s 2026 appliance models to older hardware.

The programme includes an updated AI Vision experience built with Google Gemini for eligible Family Hub refrigerators, newer Bixby interactions for selected laundry appliances and a refreshed interface with Easy Mode on applicable models with 7-inch Smart Screens.

Samsung says rollout timing, supported features and availability will vary by product, model year and market. The announcement does not provide a complete model-number list or a country-by-country schedule.

Refrigerator changes

The refrigerator update is aimed at selected Family Hub models that already have built-in cameras and AI Vision. Samsung lists eligible groups including 21.5-inch and 32-inch Family Hub refrigerators released between 2021 and 2025, along with selected 9-inch Family Hub models released in 2025.

On these models, Samsung says the updated AI Vision, built with Google Gemini, is intended to recognise and manage a wider range of fresh and packaged foods. The company specifically mentions branded and region-specific items. This is an expansion of the software experience rather than an announcement of new refrigerator camera hardware.

AI-based food recognition is an image-inference task: camera images are analysed against learned visual patterns to classify or identify items. In practice, recognition can be affected by factors such as lighting, an item being partly hidden and differences in packaging. Samsung’s announcement does not provide an independent accuracy test or quantitative comparison with the previous AI Vision system.

The update will also add screen-based experiences called Now Brief and What’s for Today? Samsung describes these as providing personalised information and helping with meal decisions. Some refrigerator experiences may require Wi-Fi and Samsung, Google or Microsoft account settings.

Laundry appliance changes

Selected Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, Washer and Dryer models released in 2024 and 2025 are included in the laundry update.

A central change is an updated Bixby experience intended to improve voice recognition and enable more natural interactions. Samsung gives a question about when a laundry cycle will finish as an example. Bixby could respond with an estimated completion time based on the appliance’s current status, although Samsung notes that actual responses may vary.

Voice-assistant functions generally combine speech recognition, language understanding and access to appliance-status data. Their performance and availability can therefore depend on the supported language, network connection, account configuration and appliance model.

Selected laundry appliances equipped with 7-inch Smart Screens will also receive a refreshed interface. Samsung’s Easy Mode is designed to simplify the screen layout and present key information more clearly. The feature is limited to applicable models with that screen hardware; the announcement does not say that every appliance in the eligible product groups will receive the same interface changes.

What the software update changes

The programme shows how software support can extend the capabilities of connected appliances after purchase. An operating-system update can change an appliance’s interface, services and supported functions without replacing its physical components.

That does not make older appliances equivalent to every 2026 model. The functions available after an update remain constrained by the existing appliance’s cameras, sensors, display, processing resources and regional service support. Samsung’s eligibility categories reflect those differences: the refrigerator update is tied to particular Family Hub screen and camera configurations, while Easy Mode is tied to 7-inch Smart Screens.

The use of Google Gemini also indicates that the updated experience includes an external AI service within Samsung’s appliance software layer. Samsung says Gemini availability, supported functions and accuracy may vary by country, language, device model and OS or One UI version. Some functions may also depend on account or app settings and subscription conditions.

Samsung presents the update programme as a way to extend the usefulness and long-term value of appliances that consumers already own. That may reduce the need for a hardware replacement when a desired function can be delivered through software, but the announcement does not measure how much longer any appliance will remain supported.

Limits and what to watch

Samsung says users will be alerted on the appliance screen when an update is available. However, several practical details remain unresolved:

  • The announcement does not list every eligible model number.
  • It provides no complete country-by-country rollout schedule.
  • The announcement does not specify which individual Gemini functions, if any, require a subscription.
  • It does not explain whether processing takes place on the appliance, in the cloud or through a combination of both.
  • It does not provide detailed privacy or data-processing information for camera images, Gemini, Bixby or account data.
  • Bixby availability varies by country, and support is limited to listed languages, accents and dialects.

The next useful details will be Samsung’s model-by-model eligibility list, the feature matrix for each market, the actual rollout timing and the privacy and data-processing terms for the connected AI features. Everyday performance of food recognition and voice interactions will also need to be assessed separately from Samsung’s launch claims.
