Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced two new PlayStation wireless headsets with custom planar magnetic drivers, PlayStation Link and AI-enhanced microphone noise rejection. Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced two new wireless gaming headsets for the PlayStation 5: the PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset and the premium Pulse Edge Wireless Headset. Both use custom, studio-inspired planar magnetic drivers and support PlayStation Link, while the company says their integrated microphones use AI-enhanced noise rejection to filter background sound.

The PlayStation Pulse Wireless Headset is scheduled to launch in select markets during the holiday season. The Pulse Edge Wireless Headset is planned to launch from early 2027. Sony has not yet announced prices, pre-order dates or exact launch dates.

Planar magnetic drivers are the central audio change

Planar magnetic drivers use a flat diaphragm that moves within a magnetic field to produce sound. Sony says the new headsets use larger planar drivers than its Pulse Elite headset, with the design intended to provide fuller, deeper bass while retaining separation, clarity and spatial accuracy.

Those characteristics are particularly relevant to games in which directional audio matters. Sony says the drivers are designed to help players identify cues such as footsteps and weapon reloads in competitive first-person shooters. That is a manufacturer description of the intended audio performance rather than a result from independent testing.

The two models use different driver configurations. The standard Pulse has four magnets per planar driver, while Pulse Edge has eight. Sony describes the latter as having twice the magnet volume of the Pulse, with the aim of producing richer and deeper bass without losing detail and precision.

Both headsets include a PlayStation Link adapter with a USB Type-C connector. PlayStation Link is Sony's wireless audio connection for compatible devices, and the company says the headsets can switch between supported PlayStation Link devices including PS5 consoles, PlayStation Portal, PC and Mac. They can also connect simultaneously to supported Bluetooth devices.

Each headset includes built-in volume controls, rotating earcups and an updated form factor that Sony says is designed for comfort and durability. Both will be offered in White and Midnight Black.

The Pulse Edge adds several features aimed at a more premium setup. It includes active noise cancellation for reducing ambient background sound, a detachable boom microphone with AI-enhanced noise rejection, and a hidden microphone that can be used when the boom is removed. It also adds built-in game-audio and chat-balance controls for PS5, an audio and microphone jack, premium materials and a carrying case.

The standard Pulse instead uses an integrated microphone with AI-enhanced noise rejection and does not list active noise cancellation, a detachable boom mic, a carrying case or game-audio and chat-balance controls among its features.

Sony's announcement establishes the product designs, feature sets and planned launch windows. Pricing, pre-order timing and the specific markets included in the initial Pulse release are due in a later announcement.
