Summary
Waymo is launching a San Francisco Bay Area program that rewards riders with $2.85 in Waymo Cash when a Waymo trip and a public-transit journey made with a linked Visa card occur within two hours. The company will also lease 40 Caltrain station parking spaces for staged vehicles.
Waymo announced a San Francisco Bay Area transit rewards program on September 22, 2026. Riders who link a Visa card in the Waymo app and use it for a Waymo trip and a public-transit journey within two hours of each other will automatically receive $2.85 in Waymo Cash. The company says the reward is initially available to employees, with a gradual public rollout planned in the coming weeks.
How the reward works
The program applies across all 27 San Francisco Bay Area transit agencies that accept contactless Visa tap-to-pay. The $2.85 reward matches the cost of a San Francisco bus fare, but it is issued as Waymo Cash—not described as a transit fare credit.
The offer is intended to connect two parts of a journey: a Waymo ride and public transit. Waymo says the program will work alongside regional transfer discounts and the Bay Area’s tap-to-pay system, which it says launched last December. It is a company incentive layered onto existing transit payment and transfer arrangements.
Waymo says recent surveys found that more than 50% of its riders in its most mature service areas—San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix—use public transit. The company describes transit networks and shared autonomous vehicles as complementary parts of a mobility system; the reward is designed to encourage connections between them.
Caltrain station parking partnership
Alongside the rewards launch, Waymo announced a partnership with Caltrain. It will lease 40 dedicated parking spaces at Caltrain stations, where Waymo vehicles can be staged to serve transit riders. Waymo says it hopes to replicate this model with additional transit agencies.
The parking arrangement is a separate operational step from the app-based reward: it places vehicles at rail stations, while the reward encourages eligible riders to combine a Waymo trip with transit. Together, the measures aim to make transfers between the services more convenient.
Waymo says the Bay Area launch builds on earlier transit-credit pilots in San Francisco and Los Angeles, its addition to LA Metro’s Mobility Wallet program, and a microtransit partnership with Via in Chandler, Arizona. It plans to expand transit rewards and agency partnerships to more cities over time.
