Cultivated archaea offer clues to the origins of complex cells
Researchers brought two archaeal strains from a lineage closely related to the ancestor of eukaryotic cells into culture. Their simple internal organization, elaborate surfaces, microbial partnerships and protein-dependent lifestyle offer clues about how complex cells arose.
