JWST Finds Strong Lensing in an Unusually Mature Galaxy Cluster

JWST observations show that the distant cluster XLSSC 122 strongly lenses light from more distant galaxies, making it the most distant known galaxy cluster with this effect. The team also found an unusually concentrated mass distribution, a result that challenges predictions from conventional cosmological models.

Hubble Completes 200,000 Orbits While Tracking Supernova Athena

NASA says Hubble completed its 200,000th orbit around Earth on Sept. 19, 2026, the same day it imaged galaxy cluster MACS J0417. The observatory is making repeated observations as astronomers anticipate a lensed reappearance of supernova Athena.

Cosmological simulations reveal how little red dots evolve into overmassive black holes

A new set of cosmological radiation-hydrodynamic simulations shows that heavy black hole seeds of about a million solar masses form naturally in dense protocluster regions, undergo a super-Eddington accretion phase that reproduces the spectral features of little red dots, and then grow into the overmassive black holes observed by the James Webb Space Telescope.
