Genetic changes may explain severe Kent MenB outbreak, scientists say

Researchers from the UK Health Security Agency and the University of Oxford say genetic material acquired from other bacteria may have made the strain behind a deadly Kent MenB outbreak unusually effective at causing severe disease. The same changes may also help explain why the strain has not continued to spread widely.

Study finds Ethiopia lacks data to guide MenAfriVac policy

A medRxiv preprint finds that Ethiopia’s current meningococcal surveillance cannot determine whether protection from the MenAfriVac campaign is waning or which non-A serogroups are circulating. An indirect model estimates population protection fell from 85% in 2015 to 24% in 2024.
