Isotope imaging maps nutrient use across adult fruit flies

A bioRxiv preprint maps labeled nutrients across adult female fruit flies, finding distinct patterns of metabolism in different body regions. In flies with gut tumors, alanine’s contribution to malate increased, and reducing gut alanine uptake lowered tumor burden.

Mouse study links reduced bone glycolysis to age-related bone loss

A bioRxiv preprint reports that age-related bone loss in mice coincided with impaired glycolysis in bone tissue. Caloric restriction and osteoblast-specific genetic interventions that enhanced glycolysis improved bone outcomes in the mice.

Preprint links 850-nm near-infrared light to lower glucose

A bioRxiv preprint reports that people in windowless offices exposed to desk lamps supplemented with 850-nm near-infrared light had reduced glucose measurements over a three-day experiment, while standard LED exposure was associated with increased levels. The study used an oral glucose tolerance test and continuous glucose monitoring.
