First-principles method improves spin-defect decay calculations

A Physical Review Letters study presents a first-principles framework for calculating internal conversion in optically active spin defects. The authors report quantitative agreement with experiments for the NV− centre in diamond and identify a previously overlooked nonradiative channel affecting a divacancy triplet lifetime in silicon carbide.

Sandia-led team creates cross-platform benchmark that directly measures quantum computational power

A team led by Sandia National Laboratories has developed the QUOPS benchmark, which directly measures the largest computationally relevant quantum circuits a machine can execute and the speed at which it can execute them. Applied to processors from Quantinuum, Google, and IBM, the benchmark revealed a roughly 5-order-of-magnitude gap between current capability and the resource requirements for useful quantum computation.
