Summary

A Nature correction fixes a normalization formula and a Methods expression in a 2025 study of chiral metamaterials. The revised figures report a maximum force ratio of 24 instead of 0.8 for one example; the authors say the corrections do not affect the study’s analyses or conclusions.

Nature has published an author correction to its 12 March 2025 article on recoverable elastic energy in chiral metamaterials. The correction fixes the normalisation formula used for a force calculation and a separate expression in the Methods. The authors say neither correction affects the article’s analyses or conclusions.

A corrected formula changes the plotted values

The original article used (F_{\rm{s}}=E_{\rm{s}}\pi r^{2}/(4L_{0})) to normalise (F_{1}^{\rm rod}). The correction gives the intended expression as (F_{\rm{s}}=E_{\rm{s}}\pi r^{2}/(4L_{0}^{2})), adding a second factor of (L_{0}) to the denominator.

That error affected the y-axes of Fig. 2a,c and Extended Data Figs. 2a, 3b, 4a, 5a and 7c. Nature’s correction says those axes have been multiplied by 30 and updated. It also changes a reported value for a chiral rod with (R=6\,\mathrm{mm}) and (\alpha_{0}=5^\circ): the maximum (F_{1}^{\rm rod}/F_{\rm{s}}) is now 24, rather than the originally printed 0.8.

The correction also fixes the Methods expression for (\Delta_{\rm out}). It was printed as (\pi^{4}a_{\rm out}^{2}/(4L_{\rm s})); the corrected expression is (\pi^{2}a_{\rm out}^{2}/(4L_{\rm s})).

The authors say the conclusions are unchanged

The numerical correction is relevant when reading the affected plots and the rod example: the updated value is thirty times the one originally reported. The authors state that the formula and Methods corrections do not alter their analyses or conclusions. The HTML and PDF versions of the article have been updated.
